Board of Trustees
Bellingham Technical College is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees, appointed by the Governor. Each member serves a five-year term and must reside within the college's district boundaries.

The Board's duties include setting the college's strategic direction, establishing policy for the college, appointing the College President, awarding tenure, and approving the operating budgets.

  Jim Groves

Appointed to the BTC Board of Trustees November 2009 and serves as the current board chair.

CAREER PROFILE:
Business & Membership Development Specialist for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 191 (since 2005) President, Northwest Journeyman Electrician with IBEW from 1993-2009.

EDUCATION PROFILE:
Attended BTC and graduated from Bellingham High School.

COMMUNITY AND PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS:
Trustee for Northwest Washington Building and Construction Trades Council Delegate for Whatcom County Central Labor Council Active Member of Habitat for Humanity.




  James W. Cunningham

Appointed to the BTC Board of Trustees in 1998. Mr. Cunningham was reappointed in June 2005 and served as the Board Chair, 2001 - 2003.

CAREER PROFILE:
Retired General Manager, Bellingham Operations, Georgia-Pacific Inc.

EDUCATION PROFILE:
Attended Seattle University, B.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering and Oceanography, University of Washington.

COMMUNITY AND PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS:
Bellingham Rotary Club; Actively involved in Lake Whatcom Watershed issues through the Lake Whatcom Stewardship Association.




  Debbie Ahl

Appointed to the BTC Board of Trustees in November 2011

CAREER PROFILE:
Currently works with small businesses and entrepreneurial startups to support economic growth in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
(Retired) President & CEO Sterling Life Insurance Company
(Retired) President & CEO, Olympic Health Management Systems, Inc.


EDUCATION PROFILE:
Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Washington University in Communications.

COMMUNITY AND PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS:
Joint Quality Committee for Peace Health St. Joseph Hospital
Board for the Center for Excellence in Management Education for the College of Business & Economics, Western Washington University.




  Mark Asmundson

Appointed to the BTC Board of Trustees January 2009

CAREER PROFILE:
Executive Director, Northwest Clean Air Agency
Former Mayor, City of Bellingham, WA
Formerly attorney in private practice

EDUCATION PROFILE:
BA Western Washington University
JD from Pacific-McGeorge School of Law.

COMMUNITY AND PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS:
Chair of the Washington Air Quality Managers Group. Former Board member of: Whatcom Transit Authority, Whatcom Council of Governments, Washington State Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board.




  Lisa Woo

Appointed to Bellingham Technical College’s Board of Trustees May 2011

CAREER PROFILE:
Woo has been a property developer since 1999, owning and managing multi-use properties and has worked as a Washington State Realtor since 1998. She is also a commercial property and small business owner, having owned the Gateway building downtown and Red Berry since 2007.

EDUCATION PROFILE:
Woo received her education from Western Washington University, Fairhaven College.

COMMUNITY AND PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS:
WWU Foundation Board from 2001 to present, Mt. Baker Theatre Board of Directors, Downtown Renaissance Network and Korean Realtors Association.
