What is WorkFirst?
WorkFirst funding is a result of The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunities Reconciliation Act of 1996. Funds are provided through a state block grant to support education and training.
TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) recipients referred for education/training through DSHS, (800) 735-7040
To qualify (all of these are required)
- Parent receiving monthly TANF financial support, AND
- Referred by the DSHS Caseworker, AND
- Have completed the Comprehensive Evaluation process at DSHS, AND
- Must agree to continually document that you are participating in required program activities for a minimum number of hours per week, established by your Caseworker at DSHS—this includes during breaks between quarters
- Access a trial eligibility calculator

Application process
- Contact your TANF Caseworker at DSHS, or to become eligible for TANF contact DSHS
- Your Caseworker will schedule you for a comprehensive evaluation, during which you will learn more about training opportunities at local colleges
- If your Caseworker refers you for training at BTC you will schedule an appointment with Melissa Wall to complete an application and to get things started
