Potential Positions Most program graduates work as veterinary assistants in animal hospitals and clinics. Opportunities also exist in animal shelters, boarding kennels, laboratories, zoos, and animal parks.
Employment Outlook Employment of veterinary assistants is expected to grow 26% through the year 2012. Within 9 months after graduation, the estimated employment rate for the Veterinary Assistant program is 84%. The graduate starting median wage is $8.99 with a wage potential of $15.08.

Typical Tasks Specific tasks typically required of a veterinary assistant include:
Assisting veterinarians prepare for surgery, sterilizing surgical equipment, observing recovering animals, and giving medications and basic medical treatment under the direction of a veterinarian or veterinary technician;
Monitoring animals under anesthesia;
Watching animals as they recover from surgery, checking whether dressings are still on correctly, observing the animals’ overall attitude, and notifying a doctor if anything seems out of the ordinary;
Taking and developing radiological x-rays;
Keeping records of feedings, tests, and treatments and/or animals received and discharged,
Feeding, watering, grooming, exercising, and otherwise caring for small or large animals, fish, or birds;
Performing laboratory procedures;
Cleaning, disinfecting and repairing cages to maintain sanitary conditions; and
Giving treatments to sick or injured animals.
