Picture of InstructorCharles Buell

Charlie is a formally trained home inspector and began building homes with his father more than 40 years ago. He spent many years in the construction business and has built a number of homes from the foundation up. He is one of those rare individuals, here on the west coast at least, who has built a home with a preserved wood foundation. Today, Charlie is owner of Charles Buell Inspections and is a busy home inspector in one of the fastest growing real estate markets in America – Seattle and King County. Charlie has the knowledge and background to teach any facet of home inspection, but his love for electrical, plumbing and insulation theory makes him the natural to teach these complex subjects. Anyone who knows Charlie knows that he lives and breathes home inspection. Charlie is an endless resource and invaluable consultant to those colleagues, friends and former students who need detailed information on the intricacies of home inspection.

Picture of InstructorSteven Smith

Steve, a formally educated home inspector, is program coordinator of Residential Home Inspection Training at Bellingham Technical College. He entered the field of home inspection after spending twenty-five years as a chief engineer in electronics. Smith, who also served as CEO of a Bellingham corporation, has worked in the fields of carpentry, plumbing, electricity, and wood destroying organisms. King of the House Home Inspection, Inc, Steve’s company, operates in Bellingham, Whatcom County and all of Northwest Washington. Steve is an accomplished presenter and has, on two occasions, offered presentations before the National Archives. He is enthusiastic about teaching others and has taught a number of topics for BTC, including roofing, structure and exteriors. Currently he teaches the first week and provides an introduction to the home inspection business and discusses ethics, professional affiliations, marketing, legal concerns and effective report writing. A favorite with students is his course on wood destroying organisms and conducting thorough pest inspections. Students learn inspection basics and the detecting skills required to pass the WSDA regulated structural pest inspector exam.

Picture of InstructorRick Pen

Formally trained as a home inspector, Rick is owner of Dependable Home inspections in the Whatcom County, WA market. Prior to beginning a home inspection business, Rick spent several years as a professional remodeler. He has extensive experience with both new construction and older homes. A few years ago, Rick decided it was time to put his collected knowledge to work in the area of home inspection. Rick's past experience allowed him to quickly develop that “critical eye” that is so necessary in the home inspection business. Rick is an experienced, approachable and popular instructor.

Picture of InstructorDavid Helm

David is a formally trained home inspector and entered the profession after a thirty-year career as a builder and remodeler. As a licensed contractor, he was responsible for building a number of quality homes. A hands on approach to building helped David develop an eye for detail that serves him well in the home inspection industry. Helm Home Inspections, David’s company, is based in Bellingham and Whatcom County. Because of his construction background, David is an excellent choice to teach, and share his knowledge of, foundations, framing, decks, roofing, siding and all exterior and interior inspection issues. Students enjoy David’s participatory approach to teaching and they are sure to learn from him how to put the inevitable problems found on an inspection into the proper perspective for the client.
