Bellingham Technical College's Radiologic Technology program will
prepare you for a career in one of the fastest evolving areas of health
care today. A rewarding profession for those who offer human compassion
and enjoy pursuing continued technical knowledge; technological advancements
are consistently introduced and provide exciting opportunities in this field.
The largest component of this discipline is medical imaging that involves
the production of an image used to diagnose medical conditions. High-tech
medical imaging methods include x-ray, sonographic, magnetic, and computer-driven
equipment. If you enjoy working with people, computers and other state-of-the-art
technologies, and want to make a difference in the lives of others, this
may be the career for you.
Who Are Radiographers?
Radiologic Technologists are essential
members of any health care team. Radiologic technologists specialize in
medical imaging. Advanced technical knowledge and human compassion are
the most important qualities of registered radiographers. Radiologic Technologists
specialize in medical imaging by providing patient care in routine and
special procedures performed to diagnose, prevent, and treat disease and
injury. Radiographers often assist radiologists, physicians who specialize
in radiography and other physicians in the delivery of health care services
in medical imaging and other related departments. Radiation protection
practices of the radiographer also ensure safe radiation environments.
In 1998, the median wage for radiologic technologists nationally was $15.81.
The median wage in Washington was $17.35. A more recent wage and salary
survey conducted in January 2001 by the American Society of Radiologic
Technologists reveals that median hourly wages for RTs in the Pacific
Northwest (Washington, Alaska, Idaho and Oregon) and Hawaii are $2.00
higher than for the United States as a whole. The full survey results
