Employment Outlook
Employment opportunities for legal administrative assistants are expected to increase 19% through the year 2012. Within 9 months after graduation, the estimated employment rate for the Legal Administrative Assistant program is 87%. Job openings should be plentiful, especially for well qualified and experienced legal secretaries. The graduate starting median wage is $11.14 with a wage potential of $21.43. *Graduate wages and placement obtained from SBCTC/WA unemployment files from 2004-05. Typical Tasks
Specific tasks typically required of a legal administrative assistant include: ? Preparing legal papers and correspondence, such as summonses, complaints, motions, and subpoenas under the supervision of an attorney; ? Keeping track of billing records; ? Performing secretarial duties such as answering the telephone, filing, greeting visitors, etc.; ? Reviewing legal journals and assisting in other ways with legal research, such as verifying quotes and citations used in legal briefs; and ? Using knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, and documents to the advantage of attorneys.
