Potential Positions Most dental assistants are employed by private dental offices. Dental assistants may also be employed by orthodontists, periodontists, hospitals, dental schools, state and local public health departments, the military, or in clinics. Although most program graduates work as dental assistants, opportunities may also exist for employment as research assistants or sales representatives.
Employment Outlook Employment opportunities for dental assistants in Washington State are expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2012 due to rapid employment growth and above average job turnover. Within 9 months after graduation, the estimated employment rate for the Dental Assisting program is 88%. The graduate starting median wage is $12.15 with a wage potential of $20.85.

Typical Tasks Dental assistants perform a variety of patient care, office and laboratory duties. Specific tasks typically required of a dental assistant include: Working at chair-side as dentists examine and treat patients;making patients as comfortable as possible, preparing them for treatment, and obtaining dental records; handing instruments and materials to dentists; keeping patients’ mouths dry and clear by using suction or other devices; sterilizing and disinfecting instruments and equipment; preparing tray setups for dental procedures; providing postoperative instructions to patients and instructing patients on oral health care; preparing materials for making impressions and estorations; and exposing radiographs and processing dental x-ray film as directed by dentist. Additional laboratory or office duties may be required.
