Potential Positions Graduates from the clerical assistant certificate program are likely to find work in entry level office settings. Potential positions include clerical assistant, office assistant, office clerk, information clerk, file clerk, and data entry clerk. As with other clerical employees, office assistants are employed in organizations of every description. They work for firms engaging in manufacturing, construction, wholesale and retail trade, transportation, and communications as well as banks, insurance companies, investment firms, real estate firms, and federal, state, and local government agencies.
Employment Outlook Job openings are expected to grow faster than the average through 2012. Due to the large size and the high turnover associated with these occupations, a large number of job openings should exist. Job seekers who have computer word processing skills and other secretarial skills, and knowledge of the operation of basic office machinery, such as fax machines and copiers, should have the best opportunities.
Typical Tasks Clerical assistants provide clerical support to individuals in business settings. They perform diverse duties which vary in accordance with the office procedures of each business. Specific tasks which may be required of a clerical assistant include:
Organizing and maintaining paper and electronic files;
Operating office machines such as facsimile machines, photocopiers, and telephone systems;
Composing and typing correspondence for themselves and others using typewriters and word processors including editing, printing and storing documents;
Reading and routing incoming mail;
Using computers to run spreadsheet, word processing, and database management programs; and
Performing other clerical duties as assigned.
